The Al Shira'aa Hickstead Derby 2017

Categories: None | Tags: None

After an exciting Hickstead (isn't it always?!) Nigel Coupe and Golvers Hill claimed the 2017 Al Shira'aa Hickstead Derby.

Nigel and Sue Simmons' 14-year-old Irish gelding produced only one of two clears to give the first Derby jump off since 2014. They were joined by Harriet Nuttall and A Touch Imperious.

Completing the jump off course with one pole down, Nigel Coupe set a target of 90.73sec.

Harriet and "Henry" finished on a time of 91.06sec with two poles down to put them into the runner up spot.
Three riders tied on four faults, first-timer Holly Smith with her Bunn Leisure Derby Tankard winner Quality Old Joker, Ireland's Billy Twomey with Diaghilev and another Irishman Dermott Lennon with Gelvins Touch.

William Funnell's Billy Buckingham impressed on his first trip round Hickstead, finishing on a round with no jumping penalties but a step back on the bank and a time fault left the pair to collect sixth place.

It had been an exciting previous day too with Matthew Sampson winning the British Speed Derby on catch ride Topflight True Carlo.

A "change in circumstances" meant Matt only found out on Friday that he would be taking over the ride from Christy Kemp. Matt set an unbeatable target when he jumped clear in 92.73sec.

Congratulations to all competitors at the Al Shira'aa Hickstead Derby Meet, from showing to scurry driving to showjumping. Take a look at some of the brilliant shots taken by K2 Photographic in our gallery.
